Ladies and gentlemen, the Pride of Berk
this is exactly my face when seeing the quality of this animation.
This again? Really? You know how many fandoms would kill for a short like this? Lower quality animation or not we’re pretty lucky.
Thank you for summing up that. I mean, do you know what would I do to have at least a short of RotG? We have books, series, 2 movies and an upcoming one, shorts, a awesome staff, etc. Dont want to be mean or anything, just want to point out that being able to have all of this its incredible and Dreamworks made a magnificent work with HTTYD2 and they also thought “Oh lets give the gang another thing with the DVD, they will be so happy” man we are a lucky fandom.
Chalm down people. I’m allowed to be upset and unsatisfied! I was looking forward to like GoTN and Boneknapper short film quality. For another short film. They’ve done it before, and it was so true to the series it’s so refreshing to be able to have those. Even if they have reasons for choosing to make it this way, I’m sorry but this is pretty lazy. And thats just how I feel about it. And I’m allowed to feel however I want. THIS here reminds me of the TV show. They suck life out of the characters and dragons and make it so dull and cartoonish when I KNOW they can do better. Lets be real, Toothless looks like a frog. I was looking forward to seeing more flawless body language and character expressions like in the other short films, because to me those are cannon, not the TV series where we get this watered down lazy no detailed half-assed stuff. And I AM HUGE fan of details. I enjoy good graphics and animation. I’m still gonna watch it. I’m still a huge fan that contributes to the fandom with all my heart and soul. I still pre-ordered it. And it’s totally okay to be able to be critical of the things you love. It’s not up for argument, I’m just expressing my feelings about the animation quality. Sorry you don’t agree. And thats fine too. The end.
The only flaw I see they committed was calling this a “short”. Should have stuck to ‘DVD EXTRA’ — this way, people wouldn’t have kept their expectations high. Yes, we’ve been spoilt with other things — GOTNF, LOTBK, and the other tiny things we see on youtube like the Viking Winter Games.
They CAN do better. We’ve seen that from the last movie. But one minute of that animation costs a STAGGERING amount of money. The TV crew aren’t lazy bums — they work with the budget they have, limited staff, and limited RESOURCES, since they cannot have access to the same kind of technology as we see in the movies, and they have to animate many more hours divided into parcels of 26.
This DVD extra might have been misleading but I find it in no way unworthy or crummy. They are not profiting from this extra — it’s included in the DVD price unlike the other extras.
Moreso, the movie crew worked around the clock to finish HTTYD2 and had to push HTTYD3 to another year. They’re pretty busy. The TV crew not only worked on the short, they also worked / are working on the TWO extra TV seasons. Let’s not piss all over their work too, as I’ve seen many sad comments regarding them on my dash.
I understand people are miffed because they expected better animation, having been mislead. I just don’t understand people who say they’d rather not have had nothing. The characterization was good. The quality isn’t top notch, but hey. It was fun, refreshing, and lets us see the new models for the upcoming seasons. I enjoy storytelling, even when it’s very flawed I try to look into small things that I really liked.
Maybe I’m satisfied with the little things. Maybe I’m simplistic and can’t appreciate proper animation. Maybe maybe maybe. All I know is I enjoyed it. People ARE allowed their opinions, indeed.
And you’ve a great point Nef. I agree with you and understand what you’re saying 100%. I’m in no way shitting on their work or DW or anything. I get that people worked hard on a budget etc. etc. I’m not saying it’s unworthy or anything like that. I’m just simply dissatisfied because I’m not a fan of the TV show quality and I’m allowed to like or dislike sometime thing that I see visually. I haven’t even been able to watch it yet, so I’m not even commenting on the story, simply the animation. Because yes my expectations were higher due to the other dragon short films- which I was under the impression that this is what it would be. And I know they’ve done better and can do better, and I know they pride themselves for being able to do as well as they do and so I’m proud of it too. Thats seriously it. Some people like the color red, others don’t. The way I see it, I am a person with opinions and this is tumblr. Any one on tumblr would understand what that means I think. People are gonna hate anything that disagrees with what they think and anyone who dares to speak up about something that might not be a popular opinion. And it’s totally cool to disagree, but in saying that everyone is allowed to have their opinion too. Agree to disagree. Or just agree that I’m allowed to feel a way about how something looks and stop jumping down throats of others who may not like something someone else does. And I’m sure I’ll enjoy the short, just not the quality. And that’s okay.
Yeah, that’s the whole point of the thing. :) I HAVE seen people talk smack of the TV crew work though, and I believe it’s because they don’t understand that crew doesn’t have the same resources. As for daring to speak up, honestly ,I think you’re in the majority, believe me! Many people are saying they don’t like the short because of the animation. What ticked me off (‘cause honestly, I’m better off since I’m happy with it and the other folk ain’t) was people downright saying this extra SHOULDN’T EXIST. I mean, if they don’t wanna watch it then fine, but using their own personal opinion as a meter of what should or should not exist, when this is material for the entire fandom, is pretty warped to me. Sorry if it seemed like I was jumping at you, or solely at you, but I wasn’t. I’m just a bit miffed over the situation. -__- and it saddens me to see many people judge the short off the bat based on animation alone.
All in all… you’re right. I shouldn’t even bother. In the end an opinion is an opinion, and both sides should just say theirs without any debating, since it doesn’t seem to lead anywhere, anyway. It’s just not constructive to be opinating ON an opinion in this case. We’ll just go around in loops.
